"4700 DRAWINGS" A G.W.R. 2-8-0 4700 Class Tender Locomotive in 5"g by Charles Kennion & Keith Wilson
This engine was designed by Mr Churchward of Swindon at the end of the First World War to handle the increasing night goods service. The 4700 in effect is an enlarged 4300, having an extra pair of driving wheels. These engines had thinner flanges on the two inner pairs of driving wheels, to allow a slight modicum of sideplay, the coupling rods had spherical bearings at the joints.
In 1925 No, 4700 was fully lined in passenger livery ( Green & Black ) at the nationalization they were all turned out in Black, then restored to Green and fully lined out in 1957. Regretfully none of these locomotives have been preserved.
